The Human Resource conclave, Pravartan 2015, organized by Institute of Management, Nirma University commenced at 10 AM on September 12, 2015. The theme for the conclave this year was Make HR to “Make in India”.
The conclave started with a welcome address by Dr. S. Garimella, Director, Institute of Management, Nirma University. He started the inauguration session by emphasizing on the need to switch focus in the direction of untapped talent residing in rural India by creating job opportunities. He mentioned that rural part of the country could bring in great opportunities for the nation.
The inaugural speaker Mr. H N Shrinivas, Advisor, Tata Sons, started the session with a critical analysis of the present state of education and training in the country. He went on to speak about the lack of skill development in the country. He also stressed on the need of skilled labor and man power in order to actualize “Make in India”. In the same context, he talked about certain training institutes in the country which focus on quality of training. He further stated how on one hand, the country needs a large number of well-trained youth, while on the other hand, the major problem of poverty and unemployment are staring at us crying for a solution. This he said, is the opportunity to “Make in India” and develop skillsets in India. He thus highlighted that bridging the gap between raw talent and skilled labor is the need of the day and that is the key to effective skill building in the country. Mr. Shrinivas quoted Dr. A P J Abdul Kalum’s famous words in this context- “India will become a super power by 2020” and said that it would come from an amalgamation of both rural and urban India. He spoke about his firm belief that India will soon become the HR hub of the world, given the fact that a wave of skill development and training has already begun in the country. Mr. Shrinivas concluded with a quote by Albert Einstein: “-A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.”
The first session of the conclave started at 11:45 AM. The theme for the first session was “Skill Building”. The first speaker of the session was Mr. Anish Philip, Associate Vice President HR at Mindtree Technologies. Mr. Philip talked about the paradigm shift occurring in the field of skill development. This has been accelerated with the launch of Skill India Initiative. In this shift the challenge for corporate citizens and institutions is whether to wait for Government’s aids and guidelines or to independently adapt to new ways of learning. Mr. Philip explicated the new trends in learning that have replaced the conventional methods. Self-paced and virtual learning, transformational learning, and skill certification are some such emerging trends. Subsequently, Mr. Philip enlightened us about the newly formed Kalinga Training Centre at Bhubaneswar, where focus has been placed on creating four types of agilities in young professionals. They include mental agility, people agility, change agility, results agility.
Importance is also given to holistic development, building readiness, as well as physical and mental fitness. Later Mr. Philip cited an example of how Mindtree adopted a Taluk, with its 157 schools. Mindtree was responsible for taking up education and training costs for ultimately creating technically sound professionals. While concluding the session, Mr. Philip advised HR professionals, to be an active part of the changing trends, rather than waiting for government policies.
The second speaker of the session was Mr. Abhay Kapoor, HR Leader at Escorts Ltd. He explained how the three important initiatives ‘Make in India’, ‘Skill India’, and ‘Digital India’ can be successful only with talented and trained individuals. In the interactive session, Mr. Kapoor highlighted the skills required at each level in an organization. He talked about an immense need for leadership skills at the 3rd level, as it includes the top officials of the organization. At the 2nd level i.e. the managerial level, Mr. Kapoor focused on presence of problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills. At the 1st level i.e. the operational level, technical knowhow and practical skills were given utmost importance.
Mr. Kapoor gave insights on a new trend of ‘talent building’ where multinational companies set up their own institutes and training centers to eventually hire these skilled professionals. He explained how ‘talent building’ was a healthier option in contrast to ‘talent buying’. Also, responsibility of firms does not end at attracting and hiring new talent; but also includes building and rebuilding talent to create value. Another trend he highlighted was building an interface between institutions and companies with a focus on rebuilding curriculum according to needs of the latter. Mr. Kapoor concluded the session with the idea of having a Hand-in-Hand relation between knowledge and skills at institutional level.
The third session was based on the theme “harnessing talent pipelines”. Prof. Sameer Pingle chaired the session. Mr. Anuj Khanna, Head HR, Foodpanda, was the first speaker of the session. He stated that integrity of human resources is of crucial importance. He opened by reassuring the students with the positive statement that there is no shortage of talent pool in India. He quoted Buddha, “Your work is to discover your work and then give your heart to it.”
He spoke about finding happiness in our work. India having the largest democratic population, has an edge over the other nations with 35 million youth, a high percentage of which can be converted into employable workforce. The need of the hour is to build a curriculum which is walking at the pace of the industry. He showed that the gap lies in the requirement and the availability of skilled workforce. He spoke of some of the challenges that the nation faces like the import of skilled workforce, lack of infrastructure and so on. He pointed out to the students that it is essential to overcome these barriers and move forward.
Mr. Pankaj Pradeep, GM HR of Fiat India, was the next speaker, who spoke about the factors that contribute to HR in make in India. He spoke on Retention and Attraction and how companies need to adopt the right policy in such matters. He also spoke about diversity and inclusiveness aiding in growth. Mr. Pankaj Pradeep stressed upon the zero defect, zero effect principle and told the students to adhere to it in order to be closest to perfection. His overall point was to shift from fishing to farming; very fine metaphors for making it on our own and building and training our own workforce which is crucial for the development of HR in India.
The theme of the final session of the day was “Creating Emotional Infrastructure”. The session was chaired by Dr. Reena Shah. The key note speaker of the session was Mr. Sandeep Tyagi, Director HR, Samsung Electronics. Mr. Tyagi highlighted the importance of ‘employee engagement’ in the sphere of emotional infrastructure and stated that the biggest challenge for India currently is the successful creation of employee engagement. He then spoke at length about the various factors that contribute towards employee engagement such as transparency in communication, organization taking on leadership roles, positive attitude towards innovation, company’s ability to empathize with its employees and ability to provide a proper hygienic environment. He also discussed that in today’s corporate world, the onus is one the organization to create a proper and congenial environment to facilitate employees’ personal development as that would lead to the company’s own benefit in the long run. The final session was the most interactive session of all and the conclave in totality was truly an enriching experience for one and all.
