Fiesta – The Music and Dance Club of IMNU, in association with SPICMACAY Ahmedabad chapter, organized a session “Taal: Come feel pure emotion” featuring Padma Shri awardee and choreographer of the Hindi film by M.F. Hussain – Meenaxi: Tale of three cities, Astaad Deboo. Astaad Deboo is an Indian contemporary and choreographer who has cultivated a dance form of his own based on his extensive training in Kathak, Kathakali and various western dance techniques. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995. He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2007.
Mr Astaad Deboo spoke about his life, his struggles to learn dance and his extensive travels around the world as far as Europe and as near as Japan. He then proceeded to perform three pieces of dance. The three dances were slow with extensive movements of the eyes and suggested an interplay of space and figures. Mr Deboo also talked about his various works such as The Basics first staged in 1980, which involved various geometrical shapes, the intent being to urge the crowd to focus on the figures. He emphasised that he gave full-fledged liberty to the audience to make their own interpretations. What could be considered as a meditative element by one may also be considered as hypothetical human figure by someone else and paradoxically, both interpretations are correct in their own sphere of thought.
Later in the session, he called in three boys and three girls as volunteers and formulated a dance step based on the name of each volunteer. On the whole, the entire performance left many among the crowd enthralled and mesmerized.
